The Scottish Borders is a beautiful area to visit with its soft rolling countryside and rich historic past, Smailholm Mains Cottages make an ideal base for exploring the region. These are cosy, comfortable farm cottages with central heating and log fires. They are situated on a working farm which produces beef, lamb, barley and swedes.

The history of the region features some of the most famous names in Scottish history. Smailholm Tower and Sandyknowe Farm where Sir Walter Scott spent part of his childhood, are both within walking distance. Mellerstain House, Scott's View, Wallace's Statue and Dryburgh Abbey are all a short drive away.

The area has an abundance of Abbeys, Castles and historical remains. The nearby town of Kelso has an Abbey, Golf Course, Garden Centre a Sunday market and a good range of pubs and eating places. Floors Castle is situated overlooking the River Tweed at Kelso.

Access to Smailholm Mains is easy by road, rail and air as both Edinburgh and Newcastle Airports and Edinburgh and Berwick Railway Stations are not far away.
